Keyword Research – Determine What Keywords You Should Rank #1 For
The right keyword phrases can greatly increase your company’s ranking on the various search engines. Knowing what keywords are being used to search for your business’s products or services, how to create more viable keyword phrases, and how to analyze keyword data will keep you at the top of a customer’s search results and give you a huge edge over your competition.
Step 1. Find Keywords
Open Google’s Keyword Tool and then sign into Adwords to plug in keywords, services, solutions that describe your company and then do a search. You’ll see how many times people looked for that keyword as well as a list of similar keywords that were searched.
Select Broad, Phrase and Exact settings to see even more keyword options. Use the export function to quickly move the results to your spreadsheet.
It will also show estimates on how many people search for each keyword phrase each month!

Step 2. Create Spreadsheet
Using a spreadsheet is a great way to stay organized as well as to track and analyze your keyword results. Download our Keyword Research (KWR) Template and add keywords for which you want to rank first in Google, Yahoo, and Bing.
Step 3. Find Rankings
Instead of sifting through pages of Google results to find your where your company ranks, use any one of the tools below. For example, with Rank Checker you simply plug in your keyword and your URL.
Tip #1: Research your competition
If you’re struggling to come up with keywords for your business, you can get ideas by checking out keywords used by your competitors. One way is to go to Google Maps and type in your service or product. You’ll see other companies and the keywords they use which you can type into Google Adwords and research based on those keywords.
- For Local Businesses: Research your competitors Google+ Local Categories.
- For National Businesses: Research your competitor’s Page Titles, Keywords, Anchor Text
Tip #2: If there is not enough data on local competitors, research large cities
If your local competitors are scarce or you have national competitors, one option is to go to the website of your largest competitor, right click and choose “View Page Source.” You can then search for keywords and see what they have listed in their meta tags and titles. Searching their website navigation headings, their links, and their text can also provide potential keywords.
Another option is to search large cities like New York for your competition’s page titles, keywords and anchor text.
Don’t worry if you see no usage data listed as that just means searches might be low for that area. The keywords will still be very useful.
Tip #3: Use Google’s Keyword Tool option to find closely related keyword phrases
If your initial search returns too much data, you can choose to only show ideas closely related to your search terms.
To successfully create, track, and analyze keyword data, follow these steps:
- Find your most effective keywords by plugging words that describe your company into Google Adwords. If you have trouble coming up with keywords, try researching your competition for ideas.
- Create a Keyword Research Spreadsheet to track and analyze the usage and results of your keywords.
- Find where you rank on the various search engines and add/adjust your keyword phrases accordingly.
